Unknown number? How to spot scam calls and texts in the Philippines - anongnetwork.com

The first thing most people do with an unknown number is check its network. That is useful, but a prefix is not a scam detector: scammers use real Globe and Smart SIMs, registered or not. Use the network check as one signal among several.

What the prefix tells you

  • Not an allocated prefix (the checker says “not a mobile prefix”): high risk. Real Philippine mobiles always sit on an allocated block. Spoofed caller IDs and VoIP routes often do not.
  • Landline area code (02, 032, 082): could be a bank or an office, could be a spoof. Banks rarely cold-call from unlisted landlines.
  • Normal mobile prefix: no information either way. Most scams come from ordinary prefixes.

Patterns that mark a scam

  • A text with a link and urgency: “your account will be suspended”, “claim your reward”, “SIM will be deactivated”.
  • Any request for an OTP, PIN, MPIN or password. No bank, wallet or operator asks for these.
  • Job offers with high pay for “simple tasks” that start with a small deposit.
  • Callers who already know your name and one detail, then ask you to confirm the rest.
  • Missed calls from international-looking numbers that invite you to call back (premium-rate callback).

What to do

  1. Do not click the link, do not call back, do not reply.
  2. Check the number with the prefix checker; note if it is unallocated.
  3. Report SMS scams to your operator (Globe, Smart and DITO each have a reporting channel in their apps) and to the NTC or the CICC hotline.
  4. Block the number on the phone.

SIM registration reduced but did not end SMS scams. Registered SIMs are still bought in bulk and used for a day. The habit that protects you is never sharing a code, not the ability to identify the network.

Can I find out who a scam number belongs to?

No. Subscriber identity is not public. Report the number to the operator and the authorities instead.

Are 0895 numbers scams?

No. 0895 is a legitimate DITO prefix. Scams come from every network.

Is an unregistered SIM a scam?

An unregistered SIM should not be able to send texts at all since 2023; a working number is registered to someone, but that does not make it safe.
