Globe vs Smart in 2026: coverage, 5G, promos and which to pick
Globe and Smart have split the Philippine market for thirty years, and the honest answer to “which is better” depends on three things: where you spend most of your time, which network your family and workmates are on, and whether you care more about data or about calls and texts. Here is how to decide without a benchmark war.
Coverage
Both cover every city and most towns. The gap shows up at the edges: Smart has historically reported the wider rural and provincial footprint, while Globe is dense in Metro Manila commercial districts (Makati, BGC, Ortigas). The only reliable test is to ask neighbours which SIM they keep, or borrow one for a day. Coverage maps from both operators are optimistic by design.
5G
Smart has reported the larger 5G site count; Globe 5G is concentrated in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. If your phone supports 5G and you live in a covered area, either network gives a real speed jump. Outside those areas the 5G logo on the SIM pack does not matter.
Promos and on-net circles
Most unli-call and unli-text promos are on-net. This is the biggest practical factor: if eight of your ten most-called numbers are Smart or TNT, a Smart SIM saves money regardless of which network is “better”. Use the bulk checker to count your contacts by network before deciding. Remember that TM and GOMO are Globe, and TNT and Sun are Smart.
Ecosystem
Globe owns a stake in GCash and bundles it into promos; Smart is tied to Maya and PLDT Home. If your household already has PLDT fibre, Smart bundles tend to be cheaper; if you live inside GCash, Globe promos reward that.
Prepaid vs postpaid
Both operators run comparable postpaid tiers with device bundles. Globe Postpaid has the larger share in Metro Manila; Smart Signature competes on data allowances. For most people prepaid on either network is cheaper unless you want a phone on instalment.
A quick decision table
| You mostly need | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Signal in a province or rural barangay | Smart (test locally first) |
| Metro Manila office districts | Globe |
| Cheapest unli text to family on TNT or Sun | Smart/TNT |
| GCash-linked data bundles | Globe |
| Data that never expires, app-only | GOMO (Globe) |
| Aggressive unlimited data pricing in a big city | DITO (see below) |
DITO is the third option and is not a Globe or Smart brand. Its prepaid data pricing is the most aggressive in the market, its coverage is strongest in the largest cities, and it requires a 4G/5G phone. Read Is DITO Smart or Globe? before ruling it out.
You do not have to choose forever
Since 2021 you can port your number to the other network for free and keep the digits. If you pick wrong, the switch costs a visit and a few days. See the porting guide.
Which network has the best signal in the Philippines?
It varies by barangay. Smart reports the wider provincial footprint; Globe is strongest in Metro Manila business areas. Test locally.
Is Globe or Smart better for data?
Both offer comparable data promos; DITO undercuts both on unlimited data in large cities.
Can I call Smart from Globe with an unli promo?
Only with an all-net promo. Globe-to-Globe promos cover Globe, TM and GOMO only.
Can I switch from Globe to Smart and keep my number?
Yes, through Mobile Number Portability, free of charge.
