What happened to Sun Cellular? Timeline, prefixes and what your Sun SIM is now
Sun Cellular still exists as a set of prefixes and, for some subscribers, as a brand on the SIM. As a network it stopped being separate years ago: Sun numbers run on Smart. Here is the short history and what it means today.
Timeline
- 2003: Digitel Mobile Philippines launches Sun Cellular. Its unlimited call-and-text promos force Globe and Smart to follow.
- 2011: PLDT acquires Digitel from JG Summit. Sun becomes a PLDT brand alongside Smart and TNT.
- 2010s: Sun subscribers are migrated onto Smart’s network as the old Digitel sites are integrated.
- Now: Sun prefixes stay active and new SIMs on those blocks are Smart-network SIMs. The Sun brand is barely marketed; support runs through Smart.
Sun prefixes
0922, 0923, 0924, 0925, 0931, 0932, 0933, 0934, 0941, 0942, 0943, 0944, 0952, 0962, 0972, 0973 and 0974. (0940 appears on older Sun lists and newer Smart lists; 0973 and 0974 were Extelcom before Sun.) All are on-net with Smart and TNT.
The 0925 exception
0925 is a Sun block, but the five-digit sub-blocks 09253, 09255, 09256, 09257 and 09258 were Globe Postpaid allocations from before the block moved to Sun. A 0925 number that starts with one of those five-digit combinations is Globe. See 0925 for the breakdown.
If you still have a Sun SIM
It works as a Smart SIM: register it through the Smart portal, load it with Smart promos, and count it as Smart for on-net calls. If your old Sun promo no longer registers, the replacement is the equivalent Smart or TNT promo.
Is Sun Cellular still active?
The network was merged into Smart; the prefixes and many SIMs remain active on the Smart network.
Is 0922 Sun or Smart?
Both: a Sun-issued prefix on the Smart network.
Can I still buy a Sun SIM?
Sun-branded SIMs are rarely sold now; a Smart or TNT SIM gives you the same network.
